Health and Dental Insurance for Individuals and Families

OHIP doesn’t pay for everything. A personal health and dental plan helps cover prescriptions, dental care, vision, therapies and more, whether you are self-employed, between jobs or retiring.

If you don’t have benefits through work, everyday health costs come straight out of your pocket. A personal plan spreads those costs out and protects you from big bills, and many plans can be started without a medical questionnaire.

What a health and dental plan can cover

Prescription drugs

Help paying for medicines not covered by OHIP or OHIP+.

Dental care

Check-ups, cleanings, fillings and, on higher plans, major dental work.

Vision care

Eye exams, glasses and contact lenses.

Paramedical services

Physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy and psychology.

Hospital and medical

Semi-private rooms, ambulance, medical equipment and supplies.

Travel emergency

Emergency medical coverage for trips outside Canada on many plans.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get coverage with a pre-existing condition?

Yes, some plans offer guaranteed acceptance with no medical questions, especially if you apply soon after leaving a group plan. Coverage for existing conditions may be limited.

Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan replace private insurance?

The federal Canadian Dental Care Plan helps eligible residents without dental insurance and with family income under the program limit. Many families still choose private coverage for broader care and choice of services.

Are premiums tax-deductible?

Self-employed people can often deduct health and dental premiums as a business expense. Others may be able to claim them as a medical expense. Ask your accountant how this applies to you.
